About
Siyu Zhong is a painter. She was born in Beijing, grew up in Haidian in the northwest of the city, and moved to the United States at fourteen. She studied at the Stamps School of Art & Design at the University of Michigan, and lives and works between Beijing and California.
I paint places that are hard to name. Most of them are in Haidian, and they are not the places people mean when they say Beijing. I paint from memory, in oil, and I don’t sketch. The paintings build up slowly, some of them over several months, poured, scraped back and painted over.
